Born and raised in Preveza-Greece,
Jimmy Pappas has been playing guitar since 1980. Growing
up in Europe made him a fan of British Rock
that included bands like: Deep Purple, Rainbow,
Thin Lizzy and Pink Floyd.
At age 18 he emigrated to
the U.S. and settled on Long
Island, New York. There, he was introduced
to a whole different type of guitar playing
which spanned many styles and players like Steve
Morse, Jeff Beck, Neal Schon, George Lynch and
others.
In the years that followed,
he studied the styles
of those players and played guitar in different
bands. In 1989 he formed an original band in
Greece and performed a series of concerts throughout
the region. Finally in 1992
he and friend keyboardist Josh Pincus formed
ICE AGE.
Among his many influences
are guitarists Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmore,
Michael Schenker, Gary Moore, Steve Morse and
Tony Iommi. When asked about them he replied:
"What makes players
like that exceptional is their honesty, sense
of melody and knowledge of music."
"It is Blackmore's unpredictability
that makes him so unique. He knows how to
stay away from cliches and make use of exotic
scales."
"Gilmore has a tremendous
sense of melody and emotion while Steve Morse's
precision is something unreal."
"Michael Schenker's
combination of melody and superb phrasing
make him one of my all time favorite guitarists."
Jimmy talking about
songwriting: "Songs are what we
use to express ourselves and communicate our
ideas to others. A song resembles a movie. The
lyrics provide the storytelling and the music
represents the visuals. We use music to provide
an emotional roller coaster for the listener
and enhance the ideas and thoughts behind the
lyrics."
